Medical Resident and Physician Recruiter Take a Leap of Faith and Stick the Landing

By

Though he still had a year of residency ahead of him and a fellowship, too, Dr. A. decided it was never too early to enter the preliminary stages of his first physician job search. He had begun to browse physician job boards as a way of pre-assessing the job market for orthopedic surgeons when Dr. A saw Director of Recruiting Katie Moeller’s ad for an Orthopedic Total Joint surgeon at a private orthopedic group in Illinois. Despite being an orthopedic surgery resident planning to pursue a spine surgery fellowship, he was immediately intrigued.

An Orthopedic Group With a Lot to Offer

In Katie’s physician job description, Dr. A noticed all the benefits the organization was offering, including autonomy, a flexible schedule, growth opportunities, and a fast track to partnership–all in a family-friendly, midwestern community. The group also exclusively served the two hospitals in the region, so its profitability was well-established.

Dr. A was not exactly the target audience for the total joint job ad, but he liked what the employer was offering, and the small midwestern community sounded just right for his young family. He decided to reach out to Katie to express his interest in a future opportunity with the organization.

Planning for the Future

Katie could immediately see that Dr. A could be a great fit for the group. He was confident, down to earth, and eager to put down roots in the area. His time in the military gave him more (and different) experience than most residents, which Katie thought her client would appreciate. She knew the organization had plans to expand and decided to see if they would want (and be able) to secure an Orthopedic Spine surgeon for a start date nearly two years in the future.

The CEO was extremely interested in talking to Dr. A. The group’s medical staffing plan had them hiring a spine surgeon by 2024, so if Dr. A was a good fit, they would be working ahead of schedule. After several phone conversations, the CEO invited Dr. A for an interview and insisted he bring his family so they could also gain a sense of the community.

The visit was a huge success. Dr. A impressed all of the partners, and his family was made to feel right at home by the other physicians and their families. The CEO also introduced his family to Dr. A’s, and with kids of similar ages, the families instantly hit it off.

Crafting a Competitive Offer

Katie knew Orthopedic Spine surgeons were in high demand, so when the client shared how much they wanted to hire Dr. A, she let them know that they would need to make a highly competitive offer if they hoped to gain his commitment now.

The CEO went to one of the hospitals with a bold ask–would they be willing to provide a competitive salary guarantee for Dr. A’s first two years? After that, if all went well, he would be a partner earning as much or more than his initial salary.

When Katie conveyed the news to Dr. A, he understood just how unbelievable the offer was and was thrilled to sign the contract.

Successful Leaps of Faith

Dr. A was proactive and took a chance when he contacted Katie as a final-year medical resident pursuing a fellowship in a different specialty than she was looking to hire for, and it paid off.

Thanks to Katie’s open mind, industry knowledge, and close partnership with the organization, she was able to recognize the compatibility and mutual needs between Dr. A and the orthopedic group. When Katie helped the CEO recognize this as well, he went out on a limb to secure Dr. A, and now the two parties can rest easy for the next two years.

Recruiter Helps Resident Find the Trifecta of Physician Jobs: J-1 Visa Sponsorship, Work-life Balance, and Loan Repayment

By

Beginning his final year of residency in Alabama, Dr. A was getting serious about his first physician job search. He needed to find an employer willing to sponsor his J-1 visa waiver, so he had to allow plenty of time as his options would be more limited. Even though his job options might be fewer than his fellow residents, he didn’t want to sacrifice work-life balance and much-needed loan repayment. He felt like he was looking for the perfect trifecta! Also, after visiting friends in coastal Mississippi, he loved the idea of living there and began to browse physician job boards with an eye for job postings in that area.

Jackson Physician Search Search Consultant Cori Centerino was searching for a Family Medicine physician for her client, a multi-specialty group located on the coast. The mission-minded organization needed a physician to start as soon as possible. Cori prepared her client for a wait — the average time to fill a Family Medicine physician job nationally is more than seven months — but she was confident that with time she would find the right candidate.

An Attractive First Physician Job

Cori crafted a physician job posting highlighting what she knew to be the most attractive features of the job. In addition to the coastal location, the role was 100% outpatient with the flexibility to choose between a four, four and a half, or five-day work week. The job would be ideal for a physician prioritizing work-life balance. It also came with a signing bonus and, potentially, loan repayment.

As it turned out, these qualities were exactly what caught Dr. A’s attention. After several years of an intense residency, finding a job that allowed a healthy work-life balance was extremely important to Dr. A (and his wife). The fact that the organization provided care to an underserved patient population was also appealing to him.

An Organization Willing to Wait

When Dr. A reached out in response to Cori’s ad in June, she knew right away that he was a good fit, but both worried that the resident’s timeline was too long. As a resident, he would only be available to start after completing his training the following year. Still, Cori spoke to her client about him, and while the need was indeed urgent, they were willing to wait for the right candidate. The client called Dr. A for a phone interview and then invited him to visit the organization for an on-site interview.

It was a few months before Dr. A and his wife were able to plan a visit, but when they did, they were blown away by the comfort and kindness they experienced. Dr. A hit it off with his potential colleagues, and both he and his wife liked the town. He didn’t want to rush into a decision but understood this opportunity was the trifecta he was hoping to find.

“He wanted to be sure that he was making the right decision for the long run,” explains Cori. “I wanted to give him the time and space he needed while still conveying the urgency of my client. It was a delicate balance.”

An Ideal First Physician Job

Ultimately, Cori’s dedication to helping Dr. A find a job that not only met his needs, but would also be one he could be happy with for years to come paid off. He signed a contract in early November with a commitment to starting with the clinic after the completion of his training. For Dr. A, the coastal location and flexibility were attractive. Still, it was the organization’s willingness to sponsor his J-1 visa waiver and, over time, pay off his student loans that made the decision right for him and his wife. It’s not every day a resident finds a job that checks every box. He appreciated that Cori did not pressure him to decide before he was ready, and instead put his needs first. This allowed him to explore his options and discover for himself that he had indeed found the perfect physician job.

Jackson Physician Search Recruiters Team Up to Help Family Medicine Physician Make a Desperately Needed Change

By

When a new administration brought unwelcome changes to Dr. W’s organization, he began actively searching for a new family medicine job. He’d spent most of his career practicing in Iowa, and he intended to finish his career there too. He planned to work another eight to ten years before retiring, but he refused to spend those years working for an organization he no longer believed in. He was ready to make a change, and it couldn’t happen soon enough.

A Promising (but Slow-Moving) Family Medicine Job Opportunity

Dr. W was monitoring physician job boards for new Family Medicine postings. When he saw an attractive opportunity in Iowa, he immediately reached out to the recruiter. Senior Search Consultant Don Evans enjoyed getting to know Dr. W and was quick to present him for the job opening. Don’s client, however, was unable to move as quickly as Dr. W wanted even though they agreed he would be a good fit. Don knew Dr. W was looking to make a change as soon as possible, so he broke the unfortunate news to his client that Dr. W was prepared to pursue other opportunities.

Teaming Up to Find a Better Fit

Don was disappointed that his client couldn’t meet Dr. W’s ideal timeline, but he hated the idea of not being able to help Dr. W find a better opportunity. He wondered if any of his colleagues had open Family Medicine jobs in Iowa. He turned to the Jackson Physician Search job board to find out, and sure enough, Senior Search Consultant Dan Rixon had recently posted a job that seemed like it would be a great fit.

Don introduced Dr. W to Dan, and Dan immediately recognized Dr. W as an ideal candidate for his client. Dr. W was not only already licensed and practicing in Iowa, but his ties to the state were strong, and he was actively searching for a physician job in rural Iowa. Dan’s client, an organization in a town with a population under six thousand, certainly fit the bill, and despite its size, the organization was offering 75th percentile compensation, schedule flexibility, and a highly sought-after state pension fund.

An Organization Eager to Move Forward

Dr. W was indeed interested, and he encouraged Dan to present him for the job. The CEO of the organization, who was Dan’s point of contact with the client, was thrilled to learn about Dr. W and called him the very next day. The two hit it off over the phone, and he invited Dr. W to come for an on-site interview as soon as possible. Five days later, Dr. W was meeting his potential colleagues, and by the end of the interview, he had a verbal offer of employment. Just four days later, Dr. W signed the contract.

Dan’s client was thrilled to have the position filled so quickly, and Dr. W was relieved to say goodbye to his former employer in exchange for an organization more in line with his values.

Family Medicine Job Search Success

Dr. W’s physician job search success accelerated when he connected with a national physician recruitment firm. When Don couldn’t help Dr. W directly, he knew someone in the firm would likely have something that would be a good fit. Don connected Dr. W with Dan, and the process moved quickly from there. Dan’s client understood the importance of acting quickly with promising candidates, and likewise, Dr. W was happy to make himself available for calls and interviews. Dan kept the process moving, and soon both his client and Dr. W were beyond satisfied with the end result.

If your physician job search could benefit from a team of physician recruiters with access to opportunities across the nation, reach out to the Jackson Physician Search team today or start searching for physician jobs online now.

Physician Recruiter Connects New Family Medicine Physician With Hometown Hospital

By

Most residents begin searching for their first physician jobs a full year or more before finishing training. Dr. M was no different. He began the process at the same time as his peers, but when personal issues arose near the end of his Family Medicine residency, Dr. M was forced to move back to his Middle Tennessee home without so much as a job interview. He needed to live near family, but this would significantly limit his physician employment options. He decided to focus on passing his boards and kept an eye out for Family Medicine or Hospitalist jobs at local organizations, though he knew he might be facing a long commute.

A Hospitalist Job Opening at Home

Meanwhile, Senior Director of Recruiting Christen Kolloff was working with a new client located just outside of a Middle Tennessee metro. After experiencing tremendous growth in recent years, they were seeking multiple Hospitalists trained in Internal Medicine. Christen leveraged the JPS network of physician job boards to distribute the Hospitalist job ad and was working with several candidates, but when JPS Research Consultant Katherine Hurford came across Dr. M’s profile in one of the online physician databases, she saw his location and thought Christen might want to speak to him. Though he was trained in Family Medicine, he was seeking an Emergency Medicine or Hospitalist job in the area, so Katherine suspected he could be a good fit. She shared his information with Christen.

Christen reached out to Dr. M to gauge his interest in the Hospitalist job opening with her client. Dr. M had been scouring the job boards of the local hospitals, but he had not applied to that one specifically because of the Internal Medicine requirement. Christen confessed she wasn’t sure they would consider him for this reason, but she wanted to learn more about him. If it seemed like a good match, she would present him to the client and advocate on his behalf.

The Physician Next Door…

The more Christen learned about Dr. M the more certain she was that he was the best fit for her client. The hospital was not just in the same metro area, but it was literally down the street from where he lived. In fact, he had been born there! He also knew several of the physicians on staff because he had completed a few rotations there during his training.

“The CEO of the hospital has a lot of pride in the town,” Christen said. “So I knew he would love the fact that Dr. M was born and raised there and wanted to build his adult life there as well.”

Christen was right. The client immediately set up a virtual interview, and from there, the process moved quickly. Because he was local, there was nothing to delay the on-site interview. Everyone who met Dr. M could sense that he belonged there. Though he didn’t have the Internal Medicine background they were looking for, he had already passed his boards, was in the process of getting his Tennessee license, and if hired, he was extremely likely to stay long-term. It was a winning situation for everyone.

Physician Job Search Success

Dr. M was thrilled to receive an offer fewer than 30 days after connecting with Christen. The hospital was his ideal employer, but without Christen to make his case to the administrator, they were unlikely to respond to an application from a Family Medicine physician.

“Dr. M wasn’t a perfect match for the job, but with his deeply rooted ties to the area–and to the hospital itself–I knew they had to meet him,” Christen says. “I was happy to advocate for him, and ultimately, the client was thrilled to find such a great fit right in their own backyard.”

Pediatrician Takes a Chance on a Small Town and Finds a Practice to Call Home

By

A physician’s career journey doesn’t always start out on the expected path. This seems especially true for physicians who finished training during the height of the pandemic. Whether due to family needs, mental or physical health issues, or existential crises, some physicians took time off after training and delayed their job searches indefinitely. For Dr. M, it was personal health issues that forced her to take time off after completing her training in 2021. When she felt ready to work again, she took locum jobs while searching for a full-time pediatrician job. Currently residing in Ohio, she was open to relocating but hoped to stay in or near a major metro area. When she received a marketing email from Jackson Physician Search about a pediatrics job in North Carolina, she was intrigued at first but worried the location was too rural. She moved on from the job ad without applying.

An Ideal Employer

JPS Senior Search Consultant Sydney Johnson was working on what would be her third placement with a North Carolina healthcare organization. Though the organization itself was big, she was working to find a pediatrician for a small, satellite office in the northeast corner of the state. The practice had a lot to offer a physician–high retention rates, minimal call, and an excellent mentorship program. More importantly, everyone from the nursing staff to the physicians to the practice administrator seemed genuinely happy to be there. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and physicians enjoyed an excellent quality of life. Sydney knew from experience that if she could get a candidate on-site, the candidate would fall in love with the group.

A Passionate Recruiter and an Open-Minded Physician

However, finding candidates who would seriously consider the small, remote location was tough. Instead of waiting for physicians to apply for the job, she began calling a list of potential leads. As a pediatrician in an active job search, Dr. M was on that list, and she was happy to get Sydney’s call. Though she wasn’t looking for a job in North Carolina, the way Sydney talked about the practice intrigued her.

“I just can’t say enough good things about this client and specifically, this practice,” Sydney says. “As a recruiter, they are wonderful to work with, and I know from talking to the physicians on staff that it is truly a great place to work. I think my enthusiasm for the group came through when I spoke to Dr. M because she agreed to let me present her for the job.”

Several weeks later, Dr. M flew to North Carolina for the on-site interview. As Sydney predicted, Dr. M was impressed with the collegial atmosphere and felt instantly at ease with everyone she met. While the town was not ideal for her, she couldn’t imagine that she’d find a better professional opportunity. If they could meet her compensation demands, she could make her home in the area.

The group extended an offer to Dr. M, but the compensation was not where she wanted it to be. Sydney gathered the latest compensation data for pediatricians in the state and presented it to the client to demonstrate why they should increase the offer. Leadership was persuaded and their second offer met Dr. M’s expectations. She was happy to sign.

Physician Job Search Success

Dr. M’s story demonstrates the importance of keeping an open mind in your physician job search. One of the biggest job search mistakes physicians make is zeroing in on a single location and ignoring opportunities elsewhere. Expanding your physician job search opens up countless opportunities–one of which may just be a better fit than you imagined. Had Dr. M ruled out the North Carolina town due to its size, she would have missed out on an incredible opportunity. Fortunately, she trusted her physician recruiter, kept an open mind, and ultimately found her ideal physician job.

Exploring All Options: Recruiter Helps Physician With Second Thoughts Find a Better Fit

By

The physician job search can be intense — especially for the most in-demand specialties. Employers roll out the red carpet for candidates and bend over backward to entice them into taking the job. And while, of course, it feels good to be wanted — especially when that desire is expressed as dollar signs — the full-court press can make it difficult for physicians to step back and objectively evaluate if the opportunity is right for them. Sometimes, they find themselves accepting an offer even when their instincts are telling them to slow down.

This may or may not have been the case for Dr. W, an orthopedic surgeon practicing in the upper Midwest, when he verbally accepted an offer from a large, regional employer. However, as his start date neared and some administration changes were announced, he began to question if he was making the right decision. He knew it was time to move on from his current employer — he wanted a job with more growth opportunities — yet something told him this might not be the best decision.

Help Wanted: Orthopedic Surgeon for Program Growth

Meanwhile, JPS Senior Search Consultant Consultant Dan Morton was asked by an existing client to start a search for an orthopedic surgeon. The Wisconsin hospital had two orthopedic surgeons on staff, but the referral base was increasing and demand was growing consistently. The client was confident they would eventually need a third surgeon, but the urgency was relatively low. Dan decided to gauge the market with a few small, regional campaigns. He crafted the physician job ad and sent email and text campaigns to physicians in the database who already lived in the upper Midwest.

Shortly after the campaigns went out, Dr. W saw the ad and reached out to Dan. Fully transparent about his situation, Dr. W explained that while he had verbally accepted an offer from another organization, he was having second thoughts. He wasn’t sure he would apply for the job, but he wanted to learn more. He knew of the group and had met the surgeons, so he was curious about the opportunity.

Dan was thrilled to have a potentially interested candidate so quickly, but he knew he needed to tread lightly. He was careful not to pressure Dr. W and aimed to serve as a true consultant.

“He was clearly questioning his current offer,” Dan says. “The only way for him to feel certain would be to explore other options, so I encouraged him to have a conversation with my client.”

Discreetly Exploring Other Options

Dr. W did not want to burn any bridges, but he allowed Dan to speak to the client on his behalf and share the details of his current offer. This transparency ensured that if the client was interested in moving forward with Dr. W, they would be able to make a competitive offer.

Dan scheduled an interview with the Director of the clinic, who instantly clicked with Dr. W. Arranging meetings with the two surgeons proved more difficult, but eventually, they met with Dr. W individually and then attended a dinner for the three of them. Dr. W was able to get a better sense of the workplace culture and see how their personalities would mix.

The chemistry was apparent to all three. The two existing surgeons knew right away that Dr. W would fit in seamlessly, and Dr. W finally felt the excitement that was lacking with the other opportunity. With this group, he would be integral to the program’s expansion, and while both options came with higher physician compensation, he knew this type of growth was what he had been seeking all along.

Embracing the Right Fit

The client extended an offer the next day, and Dr. W was eager to accept. While he was sorry to disappoint the other employer, he knew he was choosing the best option and was grateful to Dan for encouraging him to explore an alternative. Dan’s client was, of course, thrilled to find a surgeon who fit so well with the existing team.

The physician job search can be a stressful process, however, a good physician recruiter can help you be aware of red flags and stay focused on your priorities. Physician Recruiter Finds Creative Solution for Gastroenterologist’s Job Search Troubles

By

Dr. E felt trapped. The gastroenterology job he once loved had become a burden in recent years. Leadership changes and poor management of the pandemic changed the way he viewed the organization, and he no longer felt his values aligned.

Dr. E’s feelings are not unusual. In the Jackson Physician Search whitepaper on the impact of COVID-19 on the physician job market, multiple recruiters reported hearing from physicians in major metros who wanted out of their current jobs, often citing burnout and disappointment with their employer’s handling of the pandemic. Many were ready to leave their employers for a fresh start in a new city.

This was not the case for Dr. E. Relocation wasn’t an option for his family, and yet, his non-compete agreement made it impossible for him to take a new gastroenterology job in the Midwestern city he called home. He needed a change but was trapped by his circumstances. He didn’t see a way out.

A Challenging Gastroenterology Job Search

Without much hope, Dr. E kept an eye on the physician job boards. He expanded his job search to include cities within 100 miles. He felt his only option would be to extend his commute. When he saw an appealing ad for a job in a nearby city, he requested more details from Katie Moeller, Director of Recruiting at Jackson Physician Search. The job itself was a good fit, but he feared the long commute would strip away any hope of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This was true for each of the out-of-town jobs he pursued.

Dr. E had seen another Jackson Physician Search ad for a job in town. He was interested but hesitant to inquire because of his non-compete. He mentioned the job–as well as his concern about the non-compete–to Katie, who was happy to make an introduction to the recruiter assigned to the hiring organization, Tara Osseck, Regional VP of Recruitment for Jackson Physician Search’s Midwestern Division. Dr. E’s hopes were low, but Katie felt he should at least have a conversation with Tara about the possibility.

A Creative Solution for a Long-term Client

Tara had a long history with the client, and she was thrilled to have an interested, qualified candidate. She asked him questions to uncover why he was unhappy with his current employer and what specifically he was looking for in his next physician job. Dr. E explained his disappointment with the changes the organization had experienced. He was production driven and motivated to work hard, but he wanted to be a part of a more collaborative group. Hearing all of this, Tara felt certain her client would be a good fit.

Of course, the non-compete was problematic, but Tara knew the client well and wondered if Dr. E could be based out of one of its satellite offices that was outside the non-compete radius. She felt it was worth presenting the candidate to the client and seeing if they would be open to the idea.

The client was very receptive to her creative solution and eager to meet Dr. E. They scheduled an interview within a week of Tara presenting him. Sure enough, Dr. E impressed everyone he met, and he was drawn to the unique culture of the organization. He knew the opportunity would provide the change he had been seeking.

Due to the complicated circumstances, it would take several months to iron out the logistics of the contract. Tara stayed involved throughout the process to streamline communication and keep negotiations moving. When the contract was finally signed, all parties were extremely grateful.

Secrets of Physician Job Search Success

Dr. E was happy to find a job that aligned with his values right in his hometown, and Tara’s client was thrilled to fill the long-vacant position with an experienced Gastroenterologist with strong ties to the community. Tara attributes the initial success to the culture of teamwork at Jackson Physician Search. Her colleague Katie Moeller had Dr. E’s best interests in mind when she suggested he have a conversation with Tara.

From there, it was Tara’s in-depth knowledge of the client’s needs, methods, and locations that allowed her to think outside the box and find a way to work around Dr. E’s non-compete.

“Had Dr. E applied for this job through a different recruiter, the non-compete would have caused them to turn him away without a second thought,” says Tara. “However, because of my long-standing relationship with the client, I was aware of the satellite office and knew the client would likely be open to using it as a creative solution.”

When all was said and done, Tara’s outside-the-box idea not only solved Dr. E’s non-compete problem, it also solved her client’s physician vacancy problem.

“It was really satisfying to bring this search to a close,” Tara says. “Especially so, because I just know Dr. E is going to knock it out of the park and build a phenomenal practice with my client.”

If you want to work with a physician recruiter that will think outside of the box and keep your best interests in mind, the team at Jackson Physician Search would love to get to know you and find out how we can help. Contact a physician recruiter today to learn more or search physician jobs now.

California Dreaming: Physician Recruiter Helps a Married Physician Couple Find Their Dream Jobs

By

While there are undeniable benefits to marrying someone who understands your career ambitions and day-to-day stressors from their own first-hand experience, when job searching, dual-physician couples often must accept that where one’s fate lies, so does the fate of the spouse. As these married physician couples are coming out of their residencies, they face some additional uncertainties when seeking their first physician jobs. Will they find jobs at the same healthcare organization? In the same community? Or will their daily commutes take them in opposite directions?

Married Physicians with California Dreams

Anesthesia resident, Dr. S was all too aware of the challenges ahead as he and his wife, an ER physician, both entered their last year of residency in Manhattan. After living and working in one of the country’s largest cities, the couple was hoping to find jobs in a smaller community with some charm. Dr. S had enjoyed living in California at one time, and he and his wife had family out west, so when he saw a posting on Doximity for an anesthesiology job in Salinas, he reached out to the recruiter right away.

Recruiter Becky Casias admits that the job search can be tough for married physicians. “You may have a perfect fit between a client and a candidate, but there is that additional challenge of finding a second opportunity for the spouse.”

According to data from a recent Jackson Physician Search and LocumTenens.com survey, the situation isn’t all that rare. In fact, nearly one in five Millennial physicians is married to another physician. The benefits and challenges of dual-physician marriages are many, but how does this pairing impact the physician job search?

This was Becky’s first thought when she spoke to Dr. S on the phone. She could tell immediately that he would be a good fit for her client, an anesthesia group that was part of a growing hospital in Salinas. However, she wondered how his wife’s physician job search would affect the process.

Two Successful Physician Interviews

Becky felt certain her client would like Dr. S, so when presenting him, she shared that his wife, an ER physician, would also be looking for a job in the area. The group indeed wanted to meet Dr. S, so they asked the hospital to find out if the ER group was hiring. While there was not a current opening in the ER group, at Becky’s suggestion, they agreed to meet with Dr. H while she was in town with her husband.

The couple flew to California in early December to meet their prospective employers. It was easy to fall in love with the Monterey area with its quaint towns and coastal scenery, and the job opportunities were attractive too. One of the partners in the Anesthesia group was an alumnus of the same university Dr. S had attended as an undergraduate student, and the two of them instantly hit it off. Dr. H, for whom collegiality was very important, found what she had been looking for during the physician interview process.

Both Dr. S and Dr. H were impressed with everyone they met, and the feelings were mutual. The anesthesia group was ready to extend Dr. S an offer, and though the ER group had not planned on hiring a new physician, they could see it would be a mistake to pass on Dr. H.

Married Physician Job Search Success

The physicians were thrilled to receive two offers from their prospective employers. After a few weeks of working through the logistics, both Dr. S and Dr. H signed contracts and were eager to start their new physician jobs in California.

Finding one physician’s “dream job” is difficult, and finding a second in the same place is almost impossible. However, if both physicians are clear about their shared priorities and open-minded about everything else, it is much more likely that they will find two physician job opportunities that meet their needs.

“There are a lot of moving parts when coordinating two offers,” says Becky. “But it’s not every day you get to place a husband and a wife together, and I was thrilled to help make it happen.”

It Takes a Village: Physician Recruiters Team Up to Help Physician Find the Perfect Fit

By

After serving a rural community in Idaho for more than twenty years, Dr. M and his wife were ready to move south to be closer to family in Texas. As a family medicine physician, Dr. M knew there would be plenty of family medicine job openings, but it was important to him that he find the right fit. He wanted to work for an organization where he could make a real impact.

When he received a marketing job email from Jackson Physician Search regarding an attractive family medicine job in Texas, Dr. M reached out to the recruiter, David Isenberg. David was quick to respond and the initial conversation proved to be the first of many. The two had instant rapport, and David felt Dr. M would be a good fit for his client.

Ultimately, the opportunity did not pan out for Dr. M, but David asked if they could stay in touch. Dr. M agreed. In the meantime, he planned to start the process of getting a Texas medical license so he could work as locum tenens until the right opportunity came along. Dr. M thanked David for keeping him in mind for future Family Medicine job openings.

A Commitment to Serving Physicians

David would do more than just keep him in mind. He had formed a connection with Dr. M and genuinely wanted to help him take the next step in his career. Though David did not have any current Texas clients with a Family Medicine job opening, he knew that others in his Jackson Physician Search regional office might. David reached out to several of our recruiters and made the introductions.

When David introduced Dr. M to JPS Senior Search Consultant Don Evans, Don did not have an active Family Medicine search open but knew it wouldn’t be long before he did. He reached out to Dr. M for a “get-to-know-you” call. The two instantly hit it off. They were in similar stages of life, and Don understood Dr. M’s motivation for change.

A Client with an Urgent Family Medicine Need

A few weeks later, Don received a client in rural Texas, about an hour outside of Houston. The organization had been searching for a Family Medicine physician for over six months, and they were ready to enlist the help of a national physician recruitment firm. The need had become urgent, and the CEO was clear about wanting a Texas-licensed physician who could start right away.

When Don met with the new client, Dr. M immediately came to mind. Dr. M was clinically qualified, interested in working in that part of Texas, and Don knew from their initial conversation that Dr. M would be enthusiastic about the scope of the specific role. He also had the experience to expand the service line of the clinic to do more women’s health, something Don hoped the client would find appealing.

A Perfect Fit

“I just knew Dr. M was right for this role,” says Don. “But he didn’t check every single one of the client’s boxes, so I picked the right moment and said, ‘You gotta see him. This is the one.’”

The administration agreed to meet with Dr. M, and Don’s instinct proved to be right–they fell in love with him. Even the CEO, who rarely spent any length of time with candidates, spent half a day with him. Dr. M was qualified, enthusiastic, and extremely personable–everything they needed in the role.

Dr. M was equally impressed. He felt he could make an impact at the clinic, and its location put him within an hour of his mother, the primary reason he was moving to Texas. When the organization extended a generous offer, he didn’t have to think twice before accepting, and he started the job almost immediately.

An “Others First” Culture of Teamwork

The culture of teamwork at Jackson Physician Search played a critical role in Dr. M’s physician job search success. When David introduced Don to Dr. M, it was because he truly had Dr. M’s best interests at heart and knew his teammate, Don, might be able to help. David’s “others first” mentality allowed him to put Dr. M’s needs before his own desire to secure the placement. This is a core value of Jackson Physician Search and one that carries through everything we do.

Don also attributes the success to his own ability to fully understand both the needs of the client and the needs of Dr. M, who had become a good friend.

“It was an honor to work with Dr. M,” says Don. “He’s such a genuine person, and I was thrilled to find him an opportunity where I truly believe he will be happy for the rest of his career.”

Physician Recruiter Secures 2 Job Offers for Homesick Nurse Practitioner

By

When Jane completed her training as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, she was eager to serve the community where she had grown up in an area just outside of Philadelphia. However, her first job was cut short when the COVID-19 shut down forced her employer to make cuts. She had no choice but to go where she could find an available job – which happened to be across the country in the state of Washington. The job itself was fine, but moving to a new city during a lockdown made it extremely difficult to get to know people and start a life. Jane missed her family and friends back in Philadelphia. Even as COVID restrictions eased and she settled into her life on the West coast, she dreamed of finding a job back home.

Jane wasn’t the only one. According to a Jackson Physician Search Whitepaper on the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare jobs, physician recruiters have seen an increase in providers seeking jobs in their hometowns or areas that will bring them closer to family. For many, the strain of the pandemic has made them reprioritize what is most important. For Jane, family and friends were at the top of her list, and for the most part, they resided in Philadelphia.

Before long, Jane was spending her evenings searching online for Philadelphia Nurse Practitioner jobs, but after months of monitoring several advanced practice job boards, she hadn’t found anything that seemed like a fit. She kept seeing headlines about the mental health crisis and a shortage of mental healthcare providers, but this didn’t seem to be true in her hometown of Philadelphia. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner jobs simply weren’t there – at least, not that Jane could find.

Help Wanted: Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Jobs

Meanwhile, Jackson Physician Search Senior Director of Recruiting Sally Ann Patton had recently started working with two Philadelphia clients in need of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners. No sooner had she posted the Nurse Practitioner jobs to Jackson Physician Search’s network of advanced practice job boards, than she had an email from Jane in her inbox. Sally Ann reached out to her right away.

When they spoke on the phone, Sally Ann was impressed. They discussed both clients’ NP job opportunities and discovered that Jane met the requirements for both. She not only had the required Pennsylvania license, but she also had experience working at a Federally Qualified Health Center, which was the setting for one of the available NP jobs. Jane’s family ties to Philadelphia would make her an especially attractive candidate as clients are always happy to find someone motivated to remain in the area.

Home for the Holidays…and Nurse Practitioner Job Interviews

Sally Ann presented Jane to her clients and let them know that she would soon be in Philadelphia visiting family for the holidays. Both clients were eager to schedule interviews while she was home. The interviews went predictably well. One even offered Jane the job the very same day. Soon, Jane had two Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner job offers to evaluate.

Ultimately, the FQHC Psychiatric NP job was the best fit for Jane. They were able to give her everything she wanted and more. Not only was the compensation more than she was earning in Washington, but she would have increased responsibility and leadership opportunities. She returned to Washington eager to serve out her notice and prepare for her homecoming.

Digital Magic of Matchmaking

Jane might chalk up her job search luck to a holiday miracle, but the truth is, Sally Ann had strategically targeted her job posting to find Jane. Through digital targeting via a vast network of physician and advanced practice job boards, Sally Ann could ensure her NP jobs would be seen by any relevant candidate actively looking for a job. Jane did her part by setting up job search alerts from applicable NP job boards. She was destined to see Sally Ann’s NP job posts.

That said, Sally Ann often knows about likely job openings across the country before they are officially posted online. Instead of waiting for a job posting that fit her needs, Jane might have reached out to Sally Ann much earlier and let her know that she was in the market for a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner job in the Philadelphia area. A well-connected, retained recruiter like Sally Ann has relationships with clients all over the region and might have helped Jane find her way home even sooner.

If you are an advanced practice provider or physician seeking a new job, don’t wait for the right job to find you. Take a proactive approach to your job search and contact the recruitment team at Jackson Physician Search today.
